KANKAN CHAC NICTE
Caminante de otras tierras: Cuando recorras los senderos de la tierra del Mayab, encontrarás en tu camino un árbol majestuoso. Del invierno hasta el principio de la primavera tronco y ramas están grises, sin hojas ni flores. Largas vainas donde están las semillas, semejando machetes, cuelgan. Al llegar la primavera reverdece, y en el verano empieza a florecer.
En el mes de mayo, cuando todos los árboles están sin flores por la falta de lluvias, el Kankan Chac Nicté florece con toda su magnificencia.
Cascadas de pétalos se desprenden por el aire que, al caer, parecen mariposas que vuelan, de colores amarillo y rojo carmesí. Este árbol lo encontrarás también adornando los parques y avenidas de la ciudad.
Pero en el campo, donde el indio vive, es diferente.
Árbol y flores son venerados; ellos observan la floración. Dicen que, cuando tiene más flores que hojas, vendrá la lluvia buena que logrará buena cosecha de maíz; lo contrario, si tiene más hojas que flores.
Es uno de los árboles sagrados de la tierra del Mayab que florece solamente en el mes de mayo, y el maya lo planta siempre frente a sus chozas.

THE FLAMBOYAN
Traveler from other lands: When you walk the pathways of the land of the Mayab, you will come across a magnificent tree. From winter until early spring the trunk and branches present a greyish color, without leaves or flowers. Long pods resembling machetes contain the seeds and hang down. When spring arrives, the tree becomes green again, and it flowers in early summer.
In May, when all the other trees are still without flowers because of the drought, the Kankan Chac Nicté flourishes in all its beauty.
Cascades of petals are loosened by the breeze and, as they fall, they resemble crimson and yellow butterflies. The trees adorn the avenue and parks of the city.
In the countryside, where the native lives, it’s different.
There, the trees and flowers are venerated. People watch the plants flower. The say that when a tree has more flowers than leaves, good rain will come and good corn crops will be harvested. But it will be the opposite if there are more leaves than flowers
The flamboyant, one of the sacred trees in the land of the Mayab and blooms in May, is planted always in front of the homes of the Maya.
